The rood screen (a platform that separates the liturgical choir from the nave) donated by Charles V appears to be one of the most beautiful in the world. The statue of the virgin also takes centre stage; it’s hard to look away. It’s as simple as that.

Furnishings dedicated to Saint Materne

When you enter the basilica, walk between the pews and raise your eyes, you notice this famous platform: the rood screen. It was carved from white stone and was used to separate the choir and the transept.

It is nice to observe the 29 scenes with biblical characters in the niches. There is also a stamp dedicated to Charles V, suggesting that this rood screen was donated by the emperor.

The ‘black virgin’ of Notre-Dame basilica

Legend has it that this Romanesque virgin rose from the ashes of a fire during the 13th century. In light of this apparition, the lord of the area had no other choice but to promise to build an even more beautiful building in its place. A convent was established, with this virgin serving as its symbol.

Over time, the statue of Our Lady, the famous and miraculous virgin, has attracted more and more pilgrims, making this a must-visit location.

Today, the statue is nicknamed the ‘black virgin’ because of the colour of its face, as well as Jesus’ face. This is a result of the silver mask that was placed on the linden wood, which darkens over time.

A place of pilgrimage

The stained-glass windows also linger in the memory, as well as the different decorations. A visit is free and worth the detour. Various educational panels produced by students from the Université Libre de Bruxelles help to piece the history together.

In addition, the basilica, which combines Gothic and Romanesque elements, is conducive to contemplation inside and out.

The building is particularly striking, especially during the Trinity march, which takes place every June. The march of the walkers in this building is impressive.

The time has come to step through that big wooden door.
